These Chocolate Covered Strawberry Witch Brooms are such a fun and easy Halloween treat! 🍓🧹 Made with fresh strawberries, melted chocolate, and pretzel sticks, they look like tiny witch’s brooms but are surprisingly simple to make.
The trick that makes these so cute is using a straw cleaner to gently create lines in the chocolate while it’s still soft. The lines give the chocolate-covered strawberries a broom-bristle look, and a pretzel stick becomes the broom handle.
They’re perfect for Halloween parties, classroom treats, Halloween snack boards, or just a fun treat to make with the kids.

Tips for Making the Best Witch's Brooms
Dry the strawberries really well. Chocolate and water don’t mix, so make sure your strawberries are completely dry before dipping.
Don’t wait too long to make the lines. The chocolate needs to still be soft when you use the straw brush. If it has already hardened, the lines won’t form as easily.
Use gentle pressure. You don’t need to dig deeply into the chocolate. Lightly dragging the brush through the coating is enough to create the broom-bristle effect.
Scrape extra chocolate off of the brush. If chocolate accumulates on the straw brush, scrape it off on the rim of the bowl of melted chocolate.
Keep them chilled. Because these are made with fresh strawberries, store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
FAQs
Can I use white chocolate instead of semisweet chocolate?
Absolutely! White, milk, or dark chocolate can all work. White chocolate would also make really cute Halloween witch brooms and would give you a different look.
Do I have to use a straw cleaner?
The straw-cleaning brush is what creates the textured broom-bristle effect, but you can use a basting brush or a small fork. You can also let the chocolate harden and then pipe lines of chocolate along the sides for the bristles.
Can I make these ahead of time?
Yes. You can make them earlier in the day and keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to serve them. Since they’re made with fresh strawberries, I wouldn’t make them several days in advance.
Chocolate Covered Strawberry Witch's Brooms
Ingredients
- 12 fresh strawberries
- 1 ½ cups chocolate chips or chocolate melting wafers
- 1 tsp coconut oil optional
- 12 pretzel sticks
- 12 wooden skewers
- 1 clean straw-cleaning brush
Instructions
- Prepare the strawberries: Wash the strawberries and dry them thoroughly. Cut the stem off so that strawberries lay flat, point facing up. Insert a wooden skewer into the top of each strawberry going halfway through the strawberry.
- Melt the chocolate: Melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth. If the chocolate is too thick, add 1 tsp coconut oil to thin it out.
- Dip the strawberries: Holding each strawberry by the skewer, dip it into the melted chocolate, coating the strawberry completely. Let the excess chocolate drip off.
- Create the broom bristles: Place the chocolate-covered strawberry on parchment paper. While the chocolate is still soft, gently drag a clean straw-cleaning brush vertically through the chocolate to create lines that look like broom bristles. Scrap chocolate off of the brush onto the rim of the melted chocolate bowl. Continue around the strawberry.
- Remove the skewer: Allow the chocolate to set for a few minutes, then gently pull out the wooden skewer.
- Add the handle: Dip 1/2 inch of a pretzel stick in the melted chocolate and insert into the opening where the skewer was.
- Chill: Refrigerate the witch's brooms for about 10 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely set.
Notes
- Make sure the strawberries are completely dry before dipping them in chocolate.
- Work quickly when creating the bristle lines so the chocolate doesn't harden before you finish.
- Use very light pressure with the straw cleaner—you only need to create grooves in the chocolate.
- Store in the refrigerator and enjoy the same day for the best texture.
