Easy Puff Pastry Witch Hats Recipe – Fun Halloween Dessert with Customizable Fillings

2 Mins read

These Puff Pastry Witch Hats are a fun and festive treat, perfect for your Halloween celebrations. With customizable fillings like chocolate spread, date caramel, and peanut butter paired with your favorite fruits, these flaky pastries are both delicious and easy to make. The hats can be made in under 30 minutes for a spooky, crowd-pleasing dessert!

Ingredients for Puff Pastry Witch Hats

  • Sheet puff pastry – this makes the witch hats puffy and flaky
  • Spread – any spread works! Some examples are chocolate spread, date caramel, or peanut butter
  • Chopped fruit – there are so many possibilities! For these witch hats, I used strawberries, sautéed apples, and bananas
  • Monk fruit powdered sugar – This is optional, but is a nice finishing touch! I use monk fruit because it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making Puff Pastry Witch Hats

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet.

  2. Prepare the Puff Pastry: Lightly flour your surface and roll out the puff pastry. Cut into 3 rectangles, then diagonally into 6 triangles.

  3. Add Filling: Spread 1 tablespoon of chocolate, date caramel, or peanut butter about 1 inch from the bottom of each triangle. Add 1 tablespoon of chopped fruit on top.

  4. Shape the Hats: Roll the triangle from the wide base to the tip to form the witch hat shape. Place on the baking sheet.

  5. Bake: Bake at 425°F for 10 minutes, then reduce to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 10 more minutes until golden.

  6. Serve: Optionally dust with powdered sugar and enjoy warm!

FAQ & Tips for Perfect Puff Pastry Witch Hats

Can I make these ahead?
Yes! Prepare the witch hats in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake. For best results, bake fresh before serving for that perfect flaky texture.

Can I use different fillings?
Absolutely! Try seed butter, almond butter, or jam. You can also mix in fruits like blueberries, raspberries, or cooked pears for variety.

What if my pastry isn’t browning?
Leave them in the oven a few extra minutes at 375°F. Ensure the oven is fully preheated for best results.

Can I freeze the witch hats?
Yes, freeze unbaked hats for up to a month. Bake directly from frozen, adjusting the time slightly.

Tips for Extra Flaky Witch Hats

  • Keep the puff pastry cold. If it warms up too much, pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes before rolling.
  • Make sure to fully preheat the oven for crisp and puffy results.
  • Avoid overfilling to prevent the pastry from leaking during baking.
